The young women chosen to participate in The Links Debutante Cotillion Ball are part of the Twin Cities' finest, excelling academically and giving back to their communities through volunteerism. The Links, Inc. is an international, nonprofit women's service organization with 274 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia, and the Bahamas. Membership consists primarily of African American women who have excelled professionally and/or made outstanding contributions through community and volunteer efforts. The 12,000 members are united through community service and giving, and friendship.

The organization, founded in Philadelphia in 1946, is one of the nation's oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women committed to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The organization has five major program facets: services to youth, national trends and services, international trends and services, the arts, and health and human services.

The Minneapolis–St. Paul Chapter, started in 1972, has as its mission to work cooperatively on matters of vital interest to youth and the community. The chapter's Young Women's Issues Forum, Academic Scholarship Program, and Health and Wellness Forums involve partnering with many social and community service agencies, fraternal and civic organizations, and Fortune 500 corporations to address the needs of its target population.
